3D Max UVW Mapping Page 2

5. Now you are going to start planar mapping

    • Next to the Unwrap UVW modified underneath the Modifier list click the little drop down box and click on select face
    • click edit and bring up the edit UVWs window
    • now select some faces and hit planar, on this round of a surface only do a few faces at a time or you will get distortion

6. Select a few more and bring them out with the others
    • I like to work with no texture and no grid, to do this click on the box in the upper right corner to turn off the checker and go to options->advanced options->turn off show grid
    • Now select a few of the faces and you will see an edge turn blue, this is where you will have to weld vertices or stitch edges together, I prefer welding vertices

7. Now select a vertices and target weld it to the other one that is blue

  • Whenever you select a vertices and another turns blue this means that they should be welded together

8. When an edge is welded properly it will turn white

9. Keep doing this until you have laid the sphere out flat

10. Once you are done if you have an extremely large object you can select your different ID’s and enlarge them to the size of the UVW box and make your textures appear nicer

    • Or you can select UV’s by their particular ID and enlarge them to fit the entire UVW box

11. Once you have laid out the sphere use textporter or print screen and bring the file into Photoshop to paint textures.

12. Once you have painted your UV layout import it into max and apply it to your sphere. You now have a fully UVWed and textured sphere or model.

You can download textporter for free from the following site
